Ethiopia’s Capital City threatens to bulldoze ‘illegal’ houses
By Muluken Yewondwossen
The Addis Ababa City Administration in Ethiopia’s capital is set to bulldoze illegal houses constructed on the edge of the city.
This is the first time Kuma Demeksa’s administration has taken this kind of measure since it came to power in May 2008. The letter distributed to the residents in Kebele 02, Koshe area at Nifas Silk-Lafto Sub City on Thursday stated that affected residents should leave their houses with their possessions by November 5. The letter did not explain what measures will be taken if the occupiers do not leave their houses.
Some house owners in the kebele that Capital interviewed said they have secured land title deed and construction permits four years ago from the city administration led by Arkebe Ekubai.
“We got our documents from the former sub city’s land development administration authority office after the city administration announced a plan to legalise this type of occupation,” one said.
