Fujifilm Student Awards

The Fujifilm Student Awards 2010 is now open for entries. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the competition, making it the longest running and most prestigious student photography awards in the UK.

Following the success of the last two years, Fujifilm Professional has again tied-in with Penguin Books to provide an amazing money can’t buy first prize.

In addition to being named Fujifilm Student Photographer of the Year 2010 the winner will see their image on the cover of the next edition of Flann O’Brien’s novel, At Swim-Two-Birds. They will also receive £250 worth of Fujifilm Professional film and 25 Penguin Classics titles of their choice. In addition to these great prizes, exhibition sponsors Genesis Imaging are providing the winner with a professional quality portfolio. The printing will be supervised by Genesis Imaging’s Creative Director, Mark Foxwell. The portfolio prize will contain up to fifteen 20in x 16in prints together with a 20in x 16in Clamshell Portfolio box. Mark will also mentor the winner for a period of one year.

This year’s brief is to take a photograph that captures the spirit of the novel which, in the words of Anthony Burgess, “assaults your brain with words, style, magic, madness, and unlimited invention.” All images must be taken on Fujifilm Professional film and submitted via the Fujifilm Student Awards website – entry is free and students can enter as many photographs as they wish. The closing date for entries is 28th February 2010.

Each short listed Merit winner will receive 10 rolls of Fujicolor professional colour negative film, a Penguin Classic of their choice and a copy of the book Ways of Seeing. Each Merit winner will be asked to submit a print for final judging.

The college or university that submits the most entries will win ÂŁ250 worth of Fujifilm Professional film and 100 Penguin Classics titles for their college or university library. On top of these prizes, Mark Foxwell will host a half-day lecture entitled Fine Art, Portfolio and Exhibition Print Production, for the photography students of the college or university that submits the most entries. The lecture will be followed by a Portfolio Critique for the students.

Jerry Deeney from Fujifilm Professional commented on the Awards: “The Fujifilm Student Awards are a major part of the curriculum for many colleges and I speak to tutors right across Britain who see the Awards as pivotal to their students’ education. Many of the winners from the previous 24 years have gone on to enjoy successful careers as professional photographers.”

Jim Stoddart, Penguin Press Art Director, Adam Freudenheim, Penguin Classics Publisher and the Publisher of Foto8 magazine, Jon Levy will judge the Awards. – Ephotozine
