Federally Employed Women (FEW) congratulated President Barack Obama for being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his work to improve international diplomacy and rid the world of nuclear weapons. “We offer our most sincere congratulations to the President. He deserves this award for work not only already accomplished on the international stage, but also for more peace efforts that will come as a result of his presidency,” asserted Sue Webster, FEW’s National President.
Obama is the fourth U.S. president to win the prestigious prize and the third sitting president to do so – a list that includes Woodrow Wilson in 1919 and Theodore Roosevelt in 1906. Jimmy Carter had been out of office for more than two decades when he won in 2002.
Wanda Killingsworth, FEW’s Special Assistant for Outreach noted the fact that the President plans to donate the prize money of about $1.4 million. That is another example of the Obama Administration’s “United We Serve and Organizing for America” theme of helping others in our nation. “FEW has taken this message to heart with a year-long initiative called “FEW: A Helping Hand,” stated Killingsworth. “The organization has ‘adopted’ two schools (one elementary and one high school) in the New Orleans area to help provide those students with resources they so greatly need such as books, supplies and uniforms through a year-long fundraiser,” Killingsworth added. Checks will be presented to students and officials at both schools during FEW’s National Training Program being held in New Orleans July 12 – 16, 2010.
“Again, we send our congratulations to our President on such an important recognition of his efforts to obtain peace in our world,” reiterated Webster. “This is not only a reflection of his good work, but also the work of millions of Americans who are helping achieve this peace. As an organization that represents civilian and active military personnel, we say thanks to President Obama and will help his Administration in any way we can to help him achieve his goals,” concluded Webster.
FEW is a private, non-profit organization founded in 1968 after Executive Order 11375 was issued that added sex discrimination to the list of prohibited discrimination in the federal government. FEW has grown into a proactive organization serving more than one million federally employed women – both in the military and civilian workforce. – Sys-con
