Ethiopia Ministry to provide 150 Acres of land for footware industrial zone

The Ministry of Trade and Industry will provide 150 acres of land for investment projects in footwear, Tadesse Haile, the Minister of State for Trade and Industry, told The Reporter. The ministry has secured 25 acres of land in the Akaki/Kaliti subcity and 125 acres more in Adama from the Oromia Regional State for a footwear industrial zone, according to Tadesse.
Footwear has become one of the major export items in the leather industry, with export earnings from the sector steadily growing to over USD 10 million last year, up from USD two million some three years ago.
The government has put in place an ambitious strategic plan that sees export earnings from footwear to sharply reach USD 175 million in 2010/2011. According to the strategic plan for the manufacturing industry under the leather sector, the production of footwear is projected to reach 20 million pair of shoes by then.
In a relative development, the ministry has secured 2500 acres of land in Kombolcha for investment projects in textiles, according to the minister.
