African Renaissance to begin with African Chamber of Commerce Assembly held in Ethiopia


Addis Abeba — The Extra-ordinary General Assembly of the Federation of the African Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Agriculture and Professions was held here at the UNECA Conference Center in Addis Ababa from July 6-7, 2009.

The assembly in its two-day session deliberated and passed decisions on the Charter and Code of conduct of the Federation, its long and short term plan, the permanent seat of the Federation and its executive council, said Getachew Ayenew, President of the Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations (ECCSA) at a press conference held along with the interim committee which was entrusted with the task of arranging and setting the agenda for the general assembly, at the association office on Thursday.

The Conference aimed at enhancing the role of all African Chambers as representatives of the private sector in their respective nations and setting the ground for the re-birth of strong continental chamber that serves as one platform, one voice, and with a common vision, the organizers said.

This Extra-ordinary General Assembly was organized by the ECCSA which is a body that represents the private sector in the country.

More than 40 Presidents of Chambers of Commerce in Africa participated in this grand Extra-ordinary General Assemble of Federation of African Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Agriculture and professions. Representatives of the private sector from Europe, America and Asia will also be in attendant, according to the organizers.

Recognizing the need for a stronger leadership for the African private sector, the ECCSA took the initiative to organize the first All African Chambers of Commerce Conference under the theme ‘Private Sector’ A venue for African Renaissance” which took place on November 25 and 26 2008 in Addis Ababa, the President recalled.

According to Getachew, the first Conference attracted business leaders from more than 30 countries worldwide and Chamber Representatives from 17 African Countries.

“The purpose of the Conference was to lay solid foundation for the emergence of vibrant Chambers of Commerce at all levels in Africa arid empowers them so that they can contribute towards the realization of a prosperous Africa”, he added.
