Man held in slaying of Denver 7-Eleven clerk

DENVER POST-Denver police announced Wednesday evening they have arrested a man in connection with last Saturday’s fatal shooting of a 7-Eleven store clerk.

Dale Wayne Baylis, 46, was taken into custody without incident outside his home at 1308 S. Logan Street. He is suspected of killing Natnael Mulugeta, a 28-year-old Ethiopian immigrant.

The shooting happened around 3:30 a.m. Saturday. Police arrived at the 7-Eleven convenience store at 567 E. Louisiana Avenue, close to Baylis’ home, to find it empty. They later found Mulugeta in a nearby alley with a gunshot wound to his chest.

Division Chief David Fisher said he could not get into details about Baylis’ motives or any possible relationship with Mulugeta.

“I’d like to assure people in the community they are safe,” Fisher said.

In 2003, Baylis was arrested in the beating and stabbing of a 66-year-old woman outside of her apartment complex on South Park Road.

At that time, Baylis’ mother told the Rocky Mountain News that her son was bipolar and innocent.

Baylis is currently being investigated for first-degree murder.

The arrest came on the same day as a funeral service for Mulugeta at St. Mary’s Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Aurora.
