Mr. Good Governance Goes Bad

Somebody needs to remind Meles Zenawi that he is supposed to be setting the example for how democracy should work in Africa. As things stand, the only example Mr. Meles, the Ethiopian prime minister, is setting is one of autocratic repression.

Mr. Meles has often been lauded as an exemplar of good government by the likes of the British prime minister, Tony Blair, who picked him to help draft his Commission for Africa report on how to reduce poverty and promote democracy on the continent. But it turns out that Mr. Meles is in favor of democracy only when people are voting for him.

During parliamentary elections in May, many voters in Ethiopia, particularly in Addis Ababa, cast ballots for lesser-known opposition party members instead of entrenched government officials. When the Meles government announced that it won 296 of Parliament's 547 seats, with the opposition taking 176, many critics charged voter fraud. To make matters worse, the ruling party then suddenly changed parliamentary rules so that only a party with 51 percent of the seats could raise an issue for discussion.

In June, rioters took to the streets of Addis Ababa. Government security forces responded by firing live rounds into crowds, killing 40 protesters. Earlier this month, another protest erupted. Government soldiers again fired live rounds on crowds of people. By the end of the clashes, some 46 more people were dead. Has Mr. Meles never heard of tear gas? Soldiers swept through the streets and arrested more than two dozen opposition party members and even a few journalists. The Committee to Protect Journalists, a New York group that promotes a free press, wrote Mr. Meles that it was "deeply troubled by your government's harassment and censorship of journalists."

Alemzurya Teshoe, 25, the daughter of one opposition leader, told Marc Lacey of The Times that police raided her home to take away her father and fatally shot her mother, who was screaming in protest. Ms. Teshoe said neighbors who went to recover her mother's body were told that they had to sign a document saying that the opposition party was responsible for the killing. "I was there when they killed my mother," she said of the request, which was later dropped. "I saw it with my own eyes."

Left with egg on its face, the British government is withholding some of Ethiopia's foreign aid money. But that would actually hurt the poorest of the poor, at no cost to Mr. Meles. Western donors should funnel money to ground-level aid projects, while shunning direct budgetary support of the government. Mr. Blair should publicly evict Mr. Meles from his Commission for Africa. The rest of the international development crowd should exile him.

That is the problem with good press: eventually you have to live up to your image.

Lets stop our tribalistic views and concentrate in fighting an oppressive regime, which is commiting gross human right violation, mass murder and arrest in the name of democracy. For all the majority of ethiopians care any leader can be from ant tribe so long as it throws this tribal divisions away, unite the country and fight the enemy all ethiopians share, POVERTY, DISEAS, HUNGER, MALNUTRITION, etc. etc.!!!!!!

If Meles or anybody else in the past did exactly that , then we would'nt be argueing about Tigre, amhara, oromo, etc. now, we would'nt die of easily avoidable and preventable diseases, we would'nt die of hunger and starvation by millions, we would have been more open to our fellow ethiopians of different ethnic groups. Instead of one looking at the other down we would respect one another as equal citizens.

Amharas were in power but amharas were and still are in the same pot as every body from any other ethnic group. Now one is there who sacrifieced so many tigreans promised them freedom but we have not seen that instead despite the popular belief that Tigray will be developed still people are dying of hunger as before. So what has Mels done for Tigray?

What all our incmbent leaders achieved is divide and rule us. Some of us are incredibly thick and follow that route. Lets wake up to the reality. We are hungry for democracy as hungry we are for food. Those who are dying of huner and starvation, disease or bullets will be gratful to any saviour. So be it if it is CUD or something else, lets see it.

Many Amhara people dream is to bring their dead lion and already knocked down system back to Ethiopia. Instead of fighting to topple current government, it's better to correct if there is a mistakes that has been done by current government. For hundreds of years Amhara destroyed the country;now they need to think how to deal with the rest of Ethiopian tribes that are getting stronger and stronger mentally, physically and spiritually. As we know all tribes don't have positive feeling toward Amhara ;so better to think again to save many Amhara people lives who are living surrounded by other tribes in all sides of Ethiopia. If Amhara don't think again to respect and live together with other 90% Ethiopian tribes, they will be wiped out from east,west and south part of Ethiopia.
Bicareful , All people who speak fluent Amharic are not Amhara , and All people who have Amhara names are also not Amhara .

Amhara is the only selfish Ethnic group In Ethiopia. Their Engineers, Doctors, Professors, and Experts didn't do any thing to the country. They rubbed, killed, harassed, other Ethiopian Ethnic groups for thousands of years.

When TPLF was in power, Professor Asrat Said, " Amhara woke up Tigire is taking your country." Professor Asrat didn't say " Ethiopian woke up"

Tigre people are the only one who shared political power for most Ethiopian Ethnic groups. This has not happened for last centuries when Amhara was in power. Also Don't forget today all ethnic groups are in power of there region and Central government. The new generation of other ethnic groups are working together, share information every second, and decide together. There is no room for Amhara dictators today. The current government brock down the Amhara chain that has been controlled from KEBELE to Central gov.

I am half Amara and half oromo. If I have the choice to have a blood drained out of my vain and could survive with no consequence, I would gladly ask the Amhara blood that is flowing in my vein be drained out of my system.

It is that blood that is making me do all the evil things. It makes me to pretend something I am not, it forces me to cheat, to steal , to be lazy; it makes me to call people who are different from me all kinds of names.

I can not count and finish what this stained blood has put me through. To me it is the source of all the dirty evil deeds I have done through out my life. That is why, I resent it . I curse the day my generous,loving, honest , tall , handsome father met my dwarf, ignorant, ugly mother who is an Amhara.

The little good nature that is in me is because of the blood I inherited from my decent Dad. Dady, I love you more than words can express. You are one of a kind. And I am proud to call myself yours; a man who is gracious and proud Oromo. Love you papa!
